Robust long documents
Conditional text
Deliver multiple versions of a document for different users and channels — print or screen. Build unique variants of technical manuals, student/teacher textbook editions, or multilanguage publications within a single InDesign source file. Hide text at paragraph, word, and even character level without relying on layers. The remaining text and anchored objects automatically reflow in the layout.
Smart Text Reflow
Automatically add pages at the end of a story, selection, or document when text is overset using this new preference. Smart Text Reflow works hand in hand with conditional text as pages are automatically deleted or added when conditional text is hidden or shown in the document.
Cross-references
Simplify the writing, production, and management of long documents. Cross-references improve technical accuracy and streamline production because they dynamically update as content is changed or moved within a document.
Hidden text indicator
Easily identify items that are not displayed in your layout without losing critical attribute information. When text or links are off your page or in a special state, you'll find that a new HT symbol appears in the Links panel to indicate that special state.
Text variables
Link text to a variable so that when you modify the variable, all instances of the text are updated throughout the document. Use text variables to create running headers and footers that are based on page content and are updated dynamically as text reflows.
Advanced bullets and numbering
Make quick work of lists by applying styles that add bullets or sequence numbers to text. Import bullets or numbering from Microsoft Word documents, and create figure or hierarchical numbering.
Placed InDesign files
Edit placed InDesign files more quickly than ever. When you place one InDesign file into another, the source file remains an editable link. Now, when you initiate an edit, the linked source file opens to the exact point where you wish to make your edits, even if that source file is a multipage long document.
Synchronized master pages
Maintain consistent page designs and styles across multiple documents or in a book file by synchronizing shared master pages.
Footnote support
Use dynamic footnotes, complete with your preferred numbering style and layout. Footnotes travel appropriately across columns and pages as text flow changes, and you can import footnotes from Microsoft Word and RTF text files.

Interactive buttons
Easily build interactive buttons using the updated Button panel. Design custom buttons or select a button from the integrated button library. Quickly create buttons that let you navigate within a dynamic document, launch a movie, or play a sound.
Hyperlinks panel
Use the redesigned Hyperlinks panel to easily create hyperlinks that navigate to external URLs, link to files with supplemental information, launch an e-mail client, or jump to a page or section of a page within the same or even a different document. Verify your hyperlinks directly in InDesign with no need to export the document to a PDF or SWF file for testing.
Export to Adobe Flash CS4 Professional
XFL export for Adobe Flash CS4 Professional
Export your InDesign document in the new XFL file format for opening in Flash CS4 Professional. Use the Flash authoring environment to add video, audio, animation, and complex interactivity.
Live text export
Work with live, editable text in Flash CS4 Professional. InDesign text exported as XFL remains editable when the XFL file is opened in Flash.
Automatic object conversion and compression
Save time and trouble when InDesign automatically converts high-resolution print assets (CMYK) to low-resolution web assets (RGB) upon export as an XFL file.
Duplicate image detection
Take advantage of the efficiencies of XFL export with duplicate image detection. An image placed multiple times in your InDesign document will be saved as a single image asset with shared locations when exported as an XFL file.
