Adobe discontinues FlashPaper

Adobe discontinues FlashPaper

Adobe discontinues FlashPaper

There was some discussion about this when Adobe took over Macromedia. Several wondered if FlashPaper would survive the merger and some days ago it was announced that Adobe won't create a new version of the FlashPaper technology.

FlashPaper was a product that Macromedia bought from Blue Pacific back in 2003. It allowed you to print to a custom printer driver that would output any document as a SWF that could be viewed online by anyone with the Flash Player installed. There was some discussion in both the Adobe and Macromedia communities back then if FlashPaper would survive the merger. It was after all a technology that competed directly with the PDF format.

Some days ago, Adobe published a FAQ that tells that FlashPaper will no longer be developed. While it probably wasn't a lucurative software for Adobe, it will be missed by many.
