PatchPanel

Adobe is pleased to offer our third-party developers and the larger Adobe Flex® development community this preview of PatchPanel, a first glimpse at combining the dynamic control of ActionScript™ with the power of Adobe’s Creative Suite®. Similar to Adobe’s ExtendScript environment for the Creative Suite, PatchPanel provides developers deep access into controlling the Creative Suite through independently-created scripts. PatchPanel provides the necessary link between the Flex development environment and the Creative Suite’s internal controls, allowing existing ActionScript developers the ability to apply their skills toward enhancing the creative process, as well as inviting a new generation of creative minds to explore the flexibility and automation possible with ActionScript.

PatchPanel is a Flex library and set of services that make it possible for Shockwave® Flash® (SWF) files to work as Adobe Creative Suite CS3 and CS4 plug-ins. Flex developers can include this Flex library in their projects in order to create Flash plug-ins that access the ExtendScript Document Object Model (DOM) of Creative Suite applications through ActionScript objects.

Note: PatchPanel is the temporary internal name of this technology. The final name has not been determined.

Note: Your use of this site including software downloads, submission of comments, ideas, feature requests and techniques on this and other Adobe maintained forums, as well as Adobe’s rights to use such materials, is governed by the Terms of Use.

Adobe Configurator

Configurator is an open source utility that enables the easy creation of panels (palettes) for use in Adobe Photoshop® CS4. Specifically, Configurator makes it easy to drag and drop tools, menu items, scripts, actions, and other objects into a panel design, then export the results for use inside Photoshop. These panels leverage the support for Adobe Flash® built into Photoshop, making it possible to drag and drop audio, video, images, and even other SWF files into a panel design.

Configurator is great for any Photoshop user who’d like to customize the application interface, without having to learn Flash/Flex/ActionScript. It’s particularly suited to authors, trainers, and other experts who’d like to create panels that make Photoshop easier to use, and who’d like to share those panels with others.

Configurator is free for anyone to use. Running the panels it generates requires installing Photoshop CS4. A full 30-day tryout version can be downloaded from Adobe.com.

Alchemy

With Alchemy, Web application developers can now reuse hundreds of millions of lines of existing open source C and C++ client or server-side code on the Flash Platform. Alchemy brings the power of high performance C and C++ libraries to Web applications with minimal degradation on AVM2. The C/C++ code is compiled to ActionScript 3.0 as a SWF or SWC that runs on Adobe Flash Player 10 or Adobe AIR 1.5.

Alchemy is primarily intended to be used with C/C++ libraries that have few operating system dependencies. Ideally suited for computation-intensive use cases, such as audio/video transcoding, data manipulation, XML parsing, cryptographic functions or physics simulation, performance can be considerably faster than ActionScript 3.0 and anywhere from 2-10x slower than native C/C++ code. Alchemy is not intended for general development of SWF applications using C/C++.

With Alchemy, it is easy bridge between C/C++ and ActionScript 3.0 to expand the capabilities of applications on the Flash Platform, while ensuring that the generated SWCs and SWFs cannot bypass existing Flash Player security protections.

Adobe is providing some example libraries, and developers are encouraged to share their ported libraries.

The Alchemy preview is prerelease software that is not supported by Adobe and may contain bugs. It is therefore advised that Alchemy not be used to generate code for use in production.

Watch Branden Hall, CTO of Automata Studios, discuss his experience working on the Ogg Vorbis porting project using Alchemy.

We are making this software available to gauge community interest in Alchemy and welcome your feedback. Please use the feedback link below to request features, make comments and report problems. Please also note that this is a research project and there is no assurance that there will be a shipping version of Alchemy.

Durango

Durango is a framework that allows developers to build Adobe® AIR™ applications that can be customized by end-users. Durango allows developers, designers and end-users to easily mashup independent components to create new applications or extend existing Durango-enabled applications. These "mashable" components can be visual or non-visual (e.g., web services). Designers and developers can rapidly create prototype applications and then generate Adobe Flex® MXML source projects for further development. End-users can take parts of their favorite applications and bring them together in new ways.

Drag and drop components

Durango takes care of all the hard work so it is easy for a developer to build a reusable component, to make their application a source or consumer of reusable components, and to enable an application to be a receiver of components. Durango offers the following drag-and-drop functionality:

  • Enable identification of reusable components in a running application
  • Handle drag-and-drop operations
  • Clone the components in the target application
  • Hook component into running application

Connect components to each other

Durango also assists end-users and developers in making connections between Durango-enabled components. A component can accept inputs and produce outputs. The framework tries to intelligently connect components together (e.g., a component that provides a text output would be automatically connected to another component that expects a text input). At runtime, the end-user or the developer can inspect these connections and reassign them or disconnect them as appropriate.

Publish and reuse web services

Durango also provides a way to publish and reuse web services. A developer could drag and drop any web service which has been encapsulated into a Flex component (even when that component has no UI) from a palette (or web page) into their application and then enter some basic information such as subscriber keys or attributes/parameters into the service’s "inspector" or "properties panel".

Automatic code generation

Designers and developers can rapidly create prototype applications and then generate Flex Builder projects for further refinement in Flex Builder. If the component developer has elected to publish their source code on the internet, that code will be fetched and incorporated into the project. Otherwise, the component will be included in it’s compiled form

Stratus

Flash Player 10 and Adobe AIR 1.5 introduce a new communications protocol called the Real-Time Media Flow Protocol (RTMFP). The most important features of RTMFP include low latency, end-to-end peering capability, security and scalability. These properties make RTMFP especially well suited for developing real-time collaboration applications by not only providing superior user experience but also reducing cost for operators.

In order to use RTMFP, Flash Player endpoints must connect to an RTMFP-capable server, such as the Adobe Stratus service. Stratus is a beta, hosted rendezvous service that aids establishing communications between Flash Player endpoints. Unlike Flash Media Server, Stratus does not support media relay, shared objects, scripting, etc. So by using Stratus, you can only develop applications where Flash Player endpoints are directly communicating with each other.

Flash Player is already the market leader in online video distribution over the web. With the introduction of RTMFP and advanced media compression technologies, Flash Player 10 is well positioned as the leader in real-time communications as well.

With Adobe Stratus you can build:

  • A video chat application
  • Multi-player games
  • Voice Over IP
