I have just uploaded a new ActionScript 3 reference / online documentation API to Google App Engine. Basically, the service takes an ActionScript 3 class name (or a fragment of a class name) and returns the URL for the online documentation for the specified class.
For example:

As I mentioned the other day, the Flex team has released a ton of information on Flex 4. One of the new features which I am most excited about is the FXG graphic format being developed.
What is FXG? From the spec:
FXG 1.0 describes an XML-based graphics interchange format for the Flash Platform. FXG contains high-level graphical and text primitives that can be used to create, group, transform and visually modify basic vector and bitmap shapes. The FXG rendering model follows very closely the Flash Player 10 rendering model and exposes all graphics capabilities of the Flash platform as well as offering expandable support to accommodate future capabilities of the Flash Player. The specification below dives into the technical details governing every element of FXG 1.0.
One of the major benefits of FXG is that it will make it much easier to build visual tooling around working with and designing Flex applications (such as Thermo and all of the Adobe CS tools).
This post is not going to go over all of the elements within FXG as you can find all of that in the spec. However, it is going to show how to start playing with FXG today using Flex Builder 3, and a nightly Flex 4 build.
Update : James Polanco just posted much more detailed instructions on how to setup Flex 4 in Flex Builder.
First, you need to setup Flex Builder 3 to work with a nightly Flex 4 SDK build (im using the Flex 4 4.0.0.3009 build). Once you have downloaded and unzipped the SDK, following the instructions in the Flex Builder docs on how to add a new Flex SDK to Flex Builder.
Once you do that, create a new Flex Project, making sure to set it to use the Flex 4 SDK which you just installed (Project > Properties > Flex Compiler > Use a specific SDK > Flex 4).
On the same screen, make sure to also set the “Require Flash Player Version” to 10.0.0.
Once you have configured the project, add the following MXML and FXG:
This will create a simple piece of content with Hello World centered on the screen.
A couple of notes on the markup.
First, notice the use of namespaces in the Application tag. http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009 is the new namespace used for Flex 4 components and classes. In order to using existing component, we need to map the mx namespace to library:adobe/flex/halo. (You can read more on the new namespacing stuff in the MXML 2009 Spec.)
Update : James Polanco points out that if you use the gumbo namespace, instead of the default namespace, you will get code hinting for the gumbo elements (such as Group).
Also, note that we placed the FXG code inside of a Group tag, and not directly inside of the Canvas element. This is because visual children of Canvas (and other containers) must implement mx.core.IUIElement, which the FXG elements (being a little lower level and focused on drawing) do not. The Group element does, and also allows FXG to be nested within it.
One of the new ActionScript APIs include in Flash Player 10 are the addition of z based proprties (joining the existing x and y). The DisplayObject.z and DisplayObject.rotationZ properties allow you to manipulate your display object on the z axis (relative to the 3D parent container).
Below is a simple example that shows how changing the rotationX, rotationY and rotationZ properties affect a DisplayObject instance.
The UI is in Flex, but of course, the APIs also work in Flash Authoring. The example requires the Flash Player 10 RC release from labs.
You can find more information on the z and rotationZ properties in the DisplayObject entry in the Flash Player 10 ActionScript APIs docs.
About a month ago, the Flex team announced that nightly builds of the next version of Flex (code named Gumbo) were now available on the opensource Flex site. Along with early versions of the SDK, the team also posted a ton of other information, including specs and API docs.
Below is a listing of links and resources about Gumbo / Flex 4. Going through these will quickly get your up to speed on what is being worked on in Flex 4, and get your ready for playing around with the new builds.

Sean Moore also has a good link round up on his blog.
’m currently architecting an ActionScript 3.0 Framework that will take advantage of OOP principles & a MVC design pattern.
In an attempt to automate as much of the work as possible, I started looking for tools that could generate AS3.0 code from UML diagrams. I found an excellent blog post by Sean Moore, with a listing of several UML diagramming tools with AS3.0 code generation.
I decided to use StarUML, which was mentioned in one of the comments. To enable AS3.0 code generation in StarUML, you will need to download the AS3.zip file & then copy the contents of the AS3.zip file to this directory location C:\Program Files\StarUML\modules\staruml-generator\templates\.
The template.cot file is a JavaScript file that StarUML uses to generate the AS3.0 code. I noticed that the AS3.0 code being generated did not include the package namespace of the parent class or the implemented interfaces, so I modified the template.cot file so that it generates the import statements of the missing namespaces. My colleague also made some revisions to the template.cot file so that it would not include the access control modifiers for the operations created in the interface AS files.
To install the modified template.cot file you can simply overwrite the C:\Program Files\StarUML\modules\staruml-generator\templates\AS3 folder with the contents of this AS3.zip file.
Here are the steps that you’ll need to follow to generate the AS3.0 code once you have the AS3.zip contents installed.
1. When you start StarUML, it will ask you for the approach you wish to use. Leave it as Default Approach and press OK.
2. Once you have created your UML diagrams and want to generate the AS3.0 code, go to the Tools menu and select “StartUML Generator …”.
3. You will be presented with a dialog asking for the template type that StarUML should use for code generation; check the AS3.0 template and click Next.
4. Select the destination directory that StarUML will place the generated AS3.0 code and then press Next.
5. Press the Generate button to begin the code generation.
6. Presto! Code generation complete. Click on Finish and then go to the destination folder that you specified in Step 4 to view your results.
Here is a sample project that I created that you can use as a starting reference point.
At FlashForward, Flash Player engineer Tinic Uro demoed a forthcoming version of the much requested 64 bit version of the Flash Player. No release dates, but we'd say this really confirms Adobe's commitment to be on all platforms.
Windows, OS X, Linux and other Unix flavors come in 64 bit versions. 64 bit software won't necessarily run faster than the 32 bit systems most of us use, in fact, they will sometimes run slower. 64 bit platforms offer a great advantage though - they can address more than 4 Gigabytes of memory and for some applications this is important. There is not a lot of 64 bit users around, it's in fact so few that it's hard to find good statistics for it. There have however been a lot of requests for this at the Flash Player Team's various blogs as running the 32 bit player in a 64 bit setup can be a bit of a hassle.
Now there is an answer. Via Brooks Andrus, we found this post by Alexander James Bustin where he tells that Flash Player engineer Tinic Uro demoed the 64 bit Flash Player at the recent FlashForward conference in San Francisco. Not only that, he also showed parts of the source code and did some "live bugfixing" while presenting (that's pretty hardcore...). Shortly after, Mike Melanson (also a Flash Player engineer) posted this "random note" that seem to confirm what Alexander saw. Obviously, this is still early days and no date has been confirmed, but stay tuned to kaourantin.net and penguin.swf for official
Have to memorize so many dates that your head is about to explode? Timetoast will help you organize them into a way that makes sense. Add the dates with a description and Timetoast will sort them into a timeline for you. You can also add pictures and browse timelines that other users have created, so if your notes look like they should be sketches on the side of a cave wall, you might just be in luck and find what you need already created.
CL Desktop makes browsing Craig's List easier. Pictures are included in the listings. Searching has more options. You can save your searches, and listings update in real time. It won't help you carry that three-legged couch from the '70s into your place, but it will help you find it. The only weakness right now is that you can't create your own listings on it yet.
Twitter is a social network that lets you tell the world about what you're thinking or doing right now. Combine that with TweetDeck and a good helping of self-importance, and you'll be hooked for good. TweetDeck lets you seamlessly read and write tweets outside of your browser, and can hide in a corner on your screen so that you can twitter responsibly and not lose an entire day to messages less than 140 characters long.
IExpenseOnline is like having a financial advisor and your mom inside your computer. While this app does require you to put in your own spending information, it's available to anyone globally. It helps you track what you spend and make, and has tips on how to cut down your expenses and save your money. It's also easier to convince the parents to send you more money if you can confuse them with pie charts.
Thanks to TokBox, you'll never need to buy another calling card. TokBox lets you call anyone with an e-mail address and leave messages, and can pull your contact list from a variety of IM tools (MSN, AIM, etc.). The coolest part? You can record video as long as you have a web cam. Give your family and friends back home a virtual tour of your new digs.
With Photoshop Express, Adobe combines the photo editing power and ease-of-use of Photoshop Elements with the RIA capabilities of Flex. You'll get two free gigs for photo storage, all your basic and favorite photo editing options (crop out that "friend" that you don't really like and pretend they were never there), and your own free URL to host all your pictures and albums. You can also seamlessly send your snapshots to Facebook, Photobucket, Flickr, or Picasa, so all your friends can find your new photos without having to hunt them down.
mooFlair is one of the best video delivery services available for your desktop. It allows you to continue watching videos while you browse through what you want to see next, create playlists, and download videos to your desktop so you can drop them into your iPod. Now you can watch the Carlton dance wherever you go.
Internet radio just got better. Finetune, a Webware 100 winner, is a music sharing service that focuses on letting users create and share playlists. Using its large music directory, Finetune can make a playlist for you based on your favorite artists. Also check out Finetune desktop, which allows you to get onto Finetune without even opening your browser.
Acrobat.com is an Adobe product that helps you work your way through any group project. Here's what you get:
Can you imagine how you'd feel if your hard drive fried and you lost everything on your computer: your documents, your pictures, your saved games, and—worst of all—your songs? MediaMaster won't save your computer from you tossing it out the window like a prop from Animal House but it will save your entire song library so you don't have to rip/download/buy them all over again. You can also check out what other users are listening to by browsing over to their playlists. It's also great for studying when you're at the library and forgot your iPod at home.
